Successful local examples

There are a number of successful Community Shops in the local area and we have benefited from conversations with their teams, learning from their experiences, both positive and negative. The Plunkett Foundation has been involved with most of them and has provided advice at every stage of funding and set-up.

Detling Community Shop has been in operation since 2018. It is housed in refurbished containers. In the first year of operation it exceeded turnover projections by 25%.

Benenden Community Shop and Cafe is based in the old village shop premises. It is a much larger operation and includes a very successful cafe. It has been in operation since 2016.

Barham shop was initially set up in a container until premises were available as part of the Village Hall refurbishment. The shop is next to the village hall and the Bowls Club with substantial parking. The shop had various benefactors including lottery funding. It is now comparable in footfall and turnover to Benenden Community Shop.
